2-Week Japan Itinerary Planning
How to make the most of your experience in Japan in two weeks
Two weeks is enough time to experience some of Japan’s most extraordinary places, but the way you structure those fourteen days makes all the difference. From Tokyo and Kyoto to Hakone, Mt. Fuji and beyond, this guide explores how to create a two week Japan itinerary that feels varied, immersive and beautifully paced.
How to Spend Two Weeks in Japan
A well-planned two week Japan itinerary should balance Japan’s iconic cities with quieter moments, cultural experiences and time to simply wander.
For a first visit, a classic route might include Tokyo, Hakone or the Mt. Fuji region, Kyoto and Osaka, with day trips or overnight stays chosen according to your interests.
But there is no single perfect route. Food lovers, design enthusiasts, art lovers, nature seekers and travelers looking for traditional Japan may all benefit from a completely different itinerary.
A Sample Two Week Japan Route
Days 1–4: Tokyo
Explore Tokyo’s neighborhoods, exceptional restaurants, contemporary culture, historic districts and the city’s extraordinary contrasts.
Days 5–6: Hakone or Mt. Fuji area
Slow the pace with an overnight stay in a traditional ryokan, hot springs and views of Mt. Fuji, when conditions allow.
Days 7–10: Kyoto
Spend several days exploring temples, gardens, traditional neighborhoods, excellent restaurants and the cultural heart of Japan. For daytrips. from Osaka, choose between the historic beauty of Nara, Osaka’s food culture, or another more remote destination suited to your interests.
Days 11–14: Beyond the Golden Route
Use the final days to explore somewhere less expected, whether that means a rural village, an art island, a mountain town or another destination that fits your particular travel style.
The Art of Planning Two Weeks in Japan
The challenge of planning Japan is rarely finding places to visit. In fact, there are almost too many possibilities.
The real art is deciding what belongs together, what deserves more time based on your particular interests, what can be skipped, and how to move between destinations without spending your trip in transit.
A thoughtful itinerary considers geography, transportation, opening days, seasonal conditions, accommodation, dining and the rhythm of the trip as a whole.
